Riley Brockington hopes that with two city councillors from Ottawa leading major municipal advocacy groups, they can really tackle city issues during this important time.

Brockington was acclaimed as president of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) at the association’s conference in Ottawa last week, taking over from Westport Mayor Robin Jones.

AMO represents more than 400 municipalities in Ontario, and Brockington has spent eight years on the association’s board. He will serve a two-year term as president.

This comes as his council mate Tim Tierney leads another municipal advocacy organization, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, which includes nearly 2,000 municipalities from across Canada.

Brockington mentioned that both he and Tierney “work well together,” and he wants their two organizations to support each other whenever possible.

“Our ultimate goal is to make this province and country better, at the municipal level in particular,” he stated.

“There are a large number of issues municipally that our colleagues are facing in Ontario and across Canada that we have to leverage our provincial and federal association to assist us in that regard.”

Before the AMO conference, Brockington said he spent nine months reaching out to mayors, reeves, wardens, and councillors throughout the province for support in his campaign for this position.

“There’s no time in AMO’s history where that association is as important as it is now, to be that strong voice to speak with our provincial, federal reps, other stakeholders that can help us and move our issues forward,” he remarked.
