Five individuals have been taken into custody and charged following a tragic shooting that occurred on school grounds in Brampton, resulting in the deaths of one man and one youth in April, according to Peel police.

Jahnoi Bell, a 21-year-old from Brampton, along with two 17-year-olds from the same area, face two counts each of first-degree murder, as stated in a news release from Peel police on Monday. One of the 17-year-olds is also facing multiple firearm-related charges.

The identities of the 17-year-olds are kept confidential under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Additionally, two more individuals have been charged in connection with the investigation. A 23-year-old from Orangeville faces charges for possessing a firearm intended for trafficking, while a 25-year-old from Toronto is charged with conspiracy to commit an offence and breaching probation.

Two people lost their lives after a shooting incident in Brampton Friday night. Peel police reported it took place at 10:23 p. m., with victims being a man in his twenties and a male youth who were pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are actively searching for suspects. CBC’s Mercedes Gaztambide has the latest updates from the scene.

Authorities claim that those accused were involved in a shooting that took place on St. Joachim Elementary School grounds near Rutherford Road and Weybridge Trail around 10:21 p. m. on April 3.

A man in his twenties was found at the location, while another male youth was located nearby along Weybridge Trail. Both suffered gunshot wounds and unfortunately passed away despite first responders’ efforts to save them, according to police reports.

At that time, officers indicated they believed this shooting was targeted.

In Monday’s statement, Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah remarked that investigators will strive for justice for both victims and their families.

“Two lives were cut short by gun violence, leaving families and a community to grieve,” said Duraiappah. “This investigation has been relentless, and these arrests are an important step toward holding those responsible accountable.”

After the incident back in April, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown expressed his “heartfelt condolences” to all affected-families, friends, and loved ones-stating that all levels of government must work together to tackle illegal firearms issues.

In Monday’s announcement, police reported finding two firearms during their investigation: one at the scene itself and another during a search warrant executed at a residence in Brampton.
