Provincial police report that they have located a third set of human remains at a property near Smiths Falls in eastern Ontario.

The latest remains have been identified as those of Lawrence Bertrim, who was last spotted in downtown Smiths Falls in September 2022.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stated they are still investigating the cause of his death, and no charges have been filed yet. A $50,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in his case is still available, according to police.

Bertrim was 42 years old when he went missing.

“Locating Lawrence Bertrim is a significant development for his family, who have waited nearly four years for answers, and for the investigative team, who have worked relentlessly on this case,” said OPP Det. Insp. Jennifer Patton in the news release.

“We understand the public interest generated by the discovery of three missing persons on a single property, and we ask for patience as investigators continue to follow the evidence wherever it leads.”

Police mentioned that Bertrim’s remains were discovered on the Kelly Jordan Road property on Aug. 6, just one day after announcing they had found another missing man, Robert Lambert, on that same property in July.

No charges have been made in Lambert’s death; however, police indicated they suspected foul play at that time.

The remains of Robbie Thomson were uncovered on the same residential property in October 2025. Four individuals have been charged related to his death, including three suspects facing first-degree murder charges.

According to reports from in 2023, Bertrim and Thomson knew each other. They were also thought to be acquainted with 34-year-old Steven Tate, whose body was found in a ditch along Highway 15 in November 2023.

Tate’s death and the disappearances of Bertrim and Thomson caught significant attention in the Smiths Falls area; locals noted how deeply affected their small town and surrounding rural community were by the discoveries of these first two sets of remains, according to local reeve.
