This year’s fair keeps the favorites while introducing a new beef cattle show, additional midway rides, and mini-buses in the demolition derby.
You’ll find stories, old photos, local businesses, activities, memories and much more in the 12-page Aylmer Fair feature, included in the Aug. 12 edition of the Express. The 178th Aylmer Fair is set to begin this Friday, Aug. 14, and will run almost non-stop until late Sunday afternoon on Aug. 16. There’ll be fun for everyone, as promised by Randy Laur, President of the Aylmer and East Elgin Agricultural Society (Aylmer Fair Board). This year’s fair is happening a week later than usual because of challenges securing carnival workers for the regular second weekend in August. The Midway is a big part of the event, Randy mentioned. “It’s not a fair without a Midway.” This timing puts it up against the annual Tillsonburg Fair that same weekend; however, he isn’t too concerned about competition given all that Aylmer has to offer. To start things off, Campbell Amusements-who provides rides, games and food booths-was excited about last year’s fair which drew nearly 10,000 locals and visitors. The company noted how attendance at Aylmer Fair has been growing over recent years. Randy anticipates that like last year, crowds will queue for all rides and games with one or two new rides expected this time around. Following recent trends and with even more attractions available this year, he hopes attendance could hit 10,000 if weather conditions are good. Additionally, he shared that free pony rides for kids would be offered by the fair board this year. <p“And of course,” he added “the really big draw at the Fair each year is the demolition derby,” starting Friday night with competitions both afternoon and evening on Saturday. “We’re hoping for the ‘banger’ double-cross; we should have 90 to 100 cars this year,” he predicted for Friday night since there were around 90 entries last year. The remaining operable cars would likely participate Saturday afternoon and evening as well. Saturday night’s derby will feature between nine to twelve “mini-buses” competing in their own event after eight participated last year. These bus derbies are becoming increasingly popular according to him. <p“We’ve got tons of locals” entering into this year's derby while others come from places like Simcoe and Woodstock among other areas. The fair draws participants from roughly within a radius of about 160 kilometers as stated by Randy. The company that managed last year’s derby will oversee Tillsonburg’s event this time around so Edge Motorsports from two years ago will return to manage Aylmer’s derby again. This event may be rough but strict safety rules ensure no one gets hurt participating at Aylmer’s fairs according to him. This year’s competition promises bigger prize payouts across all categories which he hopes will encourage more entries despite increasing costs associated with it. The demo derby doesn’t usually bring in huge profits for the fair but it makes up for it through ticket sales from fans eager to see it unfold as noted by Randy. The long-term weather forecast looks great too-warm but not too hot-which should make everything better! A special “Powerwheel” demolition derby geared towards younger drivers kicks off Saturday at 7 p. m., featuring electric-powered carts where children try to pop balloons on competitors’ carts to win prizes! If you’re wondering about food options-there’ll be up to fourteen food trucks serving everything from classic hamburgers & hot dogs along with French fries & pizza-all way through pulled pork & smoked brisket plus fried chicken! He tried some fried chicken during Canada Day weekend truck pulls at fairgrounds saying,“And it’s good! Man was it good!”Lemonade will also be available alongside adult beverages served in a beer tent located near where demolition events take place Friday night through Saturday into Sunday afternoon too!

Cattle barn shows include both dairy shows sponsored by Elgin Holstein Club while also welcoming newcomers such as Elgin County’s very first Beef Cattle Club competition taking place Sunday!
An antique lawn tractor display along with associated gear adds even more variety enhancing overall experience complemented by firefighters competing together doing fun games known as Fire Muster set scheduled similarly throughout Sunday too!
