A recent coyote attack in Whitby left a two-year-old boy with bite marks on his face.

According to Durham police, the event took place on Sunday around 8:30 p. m. at Vanier Park, where the young child was playing when an unprovoked coyote entered the park and attacked him.

Authorities reported that the boy received bite injuries to his face before his guardian and several bystanders intervened and scared the coyote away.

Officials stated that the child suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Shortly after this incident, Durham police responded to another situation involving a different coyote near Harriet and Anne Sts. in Whitby.

Residents found the animal distressed, and officers removed it from the area. Fortunately, no physical injuries were reported in this case.

Durham police are collaborating with Whitby officials, the Durham Region Health Department, and Whitby Animal Services to investigate this attack, keep track of coyote activity, and put measures in place to prevent future incidents.

Last month, Chris Leahy, a regional councillor and candidate for mayor of Whitby, urged for education about coyote safety in schools as classes get ready to resume in September. This follows two attacks on children, including one involving an eight-year-old at Jack Miner Public School playground on May 15.

The second incident occurred on June 22 when a three-year-old boy was bitten by a coyote near Coronation and Rossland Rds. in Whitby.

Whitby Mayor Candidate Advocates for Coyote Awareness Programs

“Parents should not have to worry about their children being at risk while walking to school or playing outside,” Leahy said in a statement.

“Education is one of the most effective tools we have to reduce dangerous encounters and ensure children know how to react if they encounter a coyote.”

Leahy wants planning efforts started during summer so information sessions can be organized at every public and Catholic elementary school when students return in September.
.

Should he become mayor of Whitby, Leahy plans to introduce a Coyote Response Policy designed to coordinate efforts across the community regarding coyote-related activities.., he stated that recent events-including two separate attacks on kids aged six and sixteen in Markham during May-should act as warning signs for local authorities.
“We cannot wait until another child is injured,” he declared. “By bringing schools, parents,
policeand animal services together,
Whitby can developproactive strategies that protect residents while fostering responsible coexistence with wildlife.”.

Durham Police Warn Residents About Caution During Early Morning-Evening Hours With Small Children And Pets

Durham Regional Police urge peopleto be cautious if they see any coyotes. They suggest pedestrian traffic be careful especially with small children or pets , since coyotes tend..
By calling 9 – 1 – 1 , residents can report any aggressive behavior from coyotes or immediate threats toward public safety.
Residents are encouraged.Source link
