Work has started on expanding the Perth Wastewater Lagoon, which will boost its capacity to treat wastewater and support future housing development in the area.
The Town of Perth officially kicked off the project in June, marking a significant step in its long-term plans for infrastructure. The expansion is being handled by Louis W. Bray Construction Ltd.
The contractor celebrated the groundbreaking as a key moment for both their team and the Town, noting that this project will enhance wastewater treatment capacity to serve up to 10,500 residents.
“This summer, we were proud to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Perth Wastewater Lagoon Expansion Project, an important project for Bray and a major milestone for the Town of Perth,” the company said. “We look forward to continuing our work here into the fall as we help bring this project to life.”
This expansion receives nearly $3 million from the Ontario government through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (MHIP-HEWSF).
Once finished, this added capacity will raise the lagoon’s total servicing capability to support around 10,500 people. The province indicates that this investment will facilitate nearly 2,500 new homes in Perth.
“Through our government’s $4 billion Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, we are protecting Ontario by investing in local infrastructure that drives economic growth, enables more homes and strengthens communities,” Ontario Acting Minister of Infrastructure Todd Mc Carthy said when announcing the project.
“For families and residents in Perth, this project will help unlock the construction of nearly 2,500 homes, helping support long-term growth and new jobs across the region.”
The funding comes from MHIP-HEWSF, which assists municipalities with building and improving essential water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure necessary for housing development throughout Ontario.
“Reliable infrastructure is the foundation of a growing community,” said Perth Mayor Judy Brown. “This project will help ensure Perth is ready for future growth while continuing to provide high-quality services residents and businesses depend on every day. We are grateful to the Government of Ontario for its support in helping make this important investment possible.”
Construction is expected to carry on through fall 2027.
The lagoon expansion is part of various infrastructure initiatives aimed at enhancing Perth’s service capabilities and supporting long-term housing and population growth within the community.
