A community in southwestern Ontario is facing a tough situation as heavy rainfall leads to flooding. Southwold, located just south of London, announced a state of emergency on Friday morning, marking it as at least the third municipality in Ontario to do so within the last week.
Officials in Southwold reported several road closures due to the flooding.
Environment Canada has released a special weather statement for much of southwestern Ontario.
The statement indicated that some areas had already experienced between 50 and 100 millimeters of rain by Friday afternoon, with more expected before scattered showers and thunderstorms move through later tonight.
St. Catharines and the neighboring town of Lincoln remain under states of emergency following consecutive storms last week that dumped around a quarter of the annual rainfall for that region.
The cleanup efforts were still underway on Friday in Niagara Falls, which also faced heavy rain last week.
“The biggest evidence of what happened is you see a lot of people leaving things from their basements out at the front of the front curb,” Mayor Jim Diodati said.
Diodati mentioned that residents are feeling traumatized by the events over the past week and are very aware of the “acute possibility” for further flooding with additional rain coming.
“When it started raining today, everybody got uptight because they’re like, ‘Not again.’”
