Researchers have confirmed that a tornado touched down in an area close to Kemptville, Ont., last Sunday.

The twister formed during a storm, damaging trees and fields, according to Western University’s Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP).

A survey indicated tree damage that suggests it reached wind speeds of up to 115 km/h along a short, narrow path, researchers noted.

They estimate the tornado began around 3:45 p. m. and traveled 1.18 kilometres to the northeast.

The team rated the event as EF0 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale – which is the lowest category for classifying tornadoes and downbursts. Ratings range from EF0 to EF5.

No injuries were reported, according to the NTP.

Environment Canada had issued a yellow-level rainfall warning for eastern Ontario and western Quebec that weekend, advising that between 50 and 100 millimetres of rain could be expected.
