UPDATE: Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Durham Region as a powerful storm moves into the area.

As of 4:47 p. m., the storm is situated between Burketon Station and Brougham, traveling east at 30 km/h.

This storm could produce damaging wind gusts ranging from 90 to 110 km/h, hail sized from loonie to ping pong ball (2.5 to 4.5 centimetres), heavy rainfall between 15 and 50 millimetres, and there’s a chance of a tornado.

The communities potentially affected by the storm include Ajax, Bowmanville, Brooklin, Claremont, Clarington, Greenwood, Hampton, Myrtle Station, Newcastle, Orono, Whitby, Oshawa, and Tyrone.

Environment Canada advises residents to take cover right away if threatening weather approaches. People outside should find shelter quickly and protect themselves from flying debris and large hail.

Communities like Mississauga, Brampton, Halton, Hamilton, Durham, and Toronto are under a severe thunderstorm watch.
