Windsor’s economy saw an increase of 6,000 jobs in July, lowering the unemployment rate to 7.6 per cent.

This is down from 8 per cent in June.

The labour force gained another 2,300 workers, raising the labour participation rate to 62.9 per cent from 61.6 per cent.

Nationwide, Canada added 75,000 jobs, with most growth happening in Ontario. The employment rate climbed by 0.4 percentage points to reach 60.9 per cent, while the jobless rate dipped by one-tenth of a percentage point to 6.4 per cent-marking the lowest rate in two years and the third consecutive month it has decreased.

Women were primarily responsible for last month’s job gains, filling 33,000 positions.

There was job growth seen in wholesale and retail trade, finance, insurance, real estate and rental and leasing sectors, professional and technical services, as well as construction. However, jobs were lost in public administration and agriculture.

Youth unemployment stood at 12.6 per cent in July, a decrease from its peak of 14.3 per cent recorded in April.

Ontario experienced a rise of 52,000 jobs as its unemployment rate fell by 0.2 per cent to reach 6.8 per cent.

Canadians are earning more now; the average hourly wage increased by another 2.8 per cent or $1.01 to $37.17.
