The reasons why Ontario tops the list for tornadoes in Canada, according to Environment Canada.
People in Ontario need to keep an eye on the weather as tornado season continues throughout the summer, says David Phillips, Senior Climatologist with Environment Canada.
According to Phillips, Ontario has more tornadoes than any other province in Canada, making severe summer storms a common occurrence.
He explained that tornadoes form when warm, moist air mixes with unstable air and strong lifting forces, typically along a cold front. While they can occur at any time, they’re most frequent between 2 p. m. and 7 p. m., when the heat of the day peaks.
Phillips mentioned that severe weather often provides some warning before a tornado appears.
This year, Ontario has recorded several tornadoes so far but is currently below the average of about 36 per year. Eastern Ontario has still experienced a few tornados, particularly near Verona, Kingston, and in the Ottawa Valley around Canada Day.
He urged families to stay updated through weather alerts, radio updates, and cell phone notifications and to prepare a safety plan ahead of time before bad weather hits.
