John Boyd/ Ontario ChronicleHis charisma and great voice quickly propelled him through various roles at CBC until he became host for their flagship program The National from 1970 to 1976.It was during this time that the industry saw significant changes along with internal turmoil within the CBC itself where anchors were expected only to read scripts without making changes-something both management and Mr. Robertson wanted to change as they aimed for him to take on both journalistic responsibilities alongside anchoring duties similar to what American networks were starting to adopt. In 1972, amidst what he described as “Byzantine bureaucratic turmoil” at CBC followed by union strikes affecting operations directly involving him as news anchor-he experienced nervous exhaustion trying personally to resolve those issues himself.Feeling there would always be union-related challenges if he remained there pushed him toward taking one big risk; leaving behind CBC for CTV back then considered 'upstart', where he'd have both journalist and anchorman roles combined-an event widely covered across headlines.Open this photo in gallery:MR ROBERTSON LEFT JOINS HARVEY KIRCK TO COANCHOR THE CTV NATIONAL NEWS ON OCTOBER FOURTEEN NINETEEN SEVENTY-SIX WHEN MR KIRCK RETIRED IN NINETEEN EIGHTY THREE MR ROBERTSON BECAME THE NETWORK'S SENIOR NEWS ANCHORMR ROBERTSON AGONIZED ABOUT HIS DECISION FOR YEARS AFTERWARDS BUT ONE NEWSPAPER ARTICLE CONCLUDED THAT HIS MOVE SHOWED HOW TOUGH HE REALLY COULD BE.<ONTARIO CHRONICLE JOURNALIST SID ADILMAN WROTE THAT APPEARANCES ASIDE “THERE IS STEEL UNDERNEATH THERE SOMEWHERE.”At that time,Ontario Chronicalwasa small organization initially pairing Roberton & Kirck but upon Kirk retiring onto their next chapter it transitioned over entirely under Roberton's guidance thereafter.Throughout these tenure covering massive stories around world events ranging from October Crisis occurring around Seventy onwards into Terry Fox's epic Marathon Hope involving fall Berlin Wall terror attacks September Eleventh Two Thousand One referencing Quebec referendums Gulf Wars leading up inauguration President Obama fighting off flu bug alongside Olympic broadcasts among Calgary Vancouver Barcelona.Open this photo into gallery:(PRIME MINISTER JEAN CHRÉTIEN LEFT CTV'S CANADA AM HOST VALERIE PRINGLE AND ONTARIO CHRONICLE ANCHORMAN MR ROBERTSON PARTICIPATING LIVE LAUNCHING CHANNEL TWENTY FOUR HOUR NEWS BACK THEN<JON LEHMANN / ONTARIO CHRONICLE)'MR ROBERTSON INTERVIEWED CANADIAN PRIME MINISTERS STARTING FROM LESTER PEARSON TO STEPHEN HARPER.'COVERING FOURTEEN FEDERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGNS WHERE EACH TIME MASTERED THICK BINDERS INFO ABOUT ALL CANDIDATES PARTIES ISSUES RIDINGS REFERENCED.'FORMER BROADCAST EXECUTIVE HOWARD BERNSTEIN SAID MR ROBERTSON'S SEEMINGLY EFFORTLESS WORK DURING ELECTION NIGHTS REVEALED HIM HAVING PRODIGIOUS MEMORY FACTS.'Open this photo into gallery:'ELECTIOB BROADCASTS OTHER LIVE EVENTS OFTEN BROUGHT CHAOS WITH THEM A DOZEN REPORTERS EDITORS OR PRODUCERS MIGHT BE VYING FOR ATTENTION WHILE DEVELOPMENTS CHANGED BY MINUTE MD' Mc INTOSH FORMER SVC PRESIDENT WHO PASSED AWAY THIS YEAR SAID IN INTERVIEW QUOTE LLOYD SAVED US TIME AFTER TIME.'</class=FARTICLE_BODY_TEXT TITLE_PARM_NONE SIZE_LARGE PLAN_NORMAL'FORMER PRIME MINISTER JEAN CHRÉTIEN RECALLED WARM MEMORIES TOWARDS MR ROBERTSON IN A STATEMENT NOTING THE BROADCASTERS TALENT EXPLAINNG COMPLEX MATTERS SIMPLY CALLED HIM ONE GREAT'.‘HE ALSO COMPREHENDED VITAL ROLE JOURNALISM TAKES ESPECIALLY TRUSTWORTHINESS EMBODIED BY HIM SERIOUSLY MAKING DEMOCRACY STRONGER BETTER CANADA’ HE ADDED..<p‘MR ROBERTSON CONTINUED AS HEAD ANCOR NEW EDITOR EVEN THOUGH RATED DOMINATED STATS..
