Nathan Denette/ During his first radio broadcast in Stratford, Ont., a nervous young announcer named Lloyd Robertson said, “This is CJCS Strat-herd.” Despite that shaky start, Mr. Robertson became a Canadian legend and one of the most recognized broadcasters in the country’s history. John Boyd/ Mr. Robertson served as a national television news anchor for an impressive 41 years, including 34 years hosting CTV National News With Lloyd Robertson, plus earlier work with co-anchor Harvey Kirck and six years on CBC’s The National. He also hosted travel specials like Lloyd Robertson in China. In 2012, he released a bestselling autobiography titled The Kind of Life It’s Been. Mr. Robertson passed away on Tuesday evening at the age of 92, according to a report from , which cited confirmation from his family. His remarkable career as a national anchor is unmatched both in Canada and the U. S., surpassing even American icons like Walter Cronkite from CBS News. Former anchor Peter Mansbridge stated that Mr. Robertson’s extensive work “changed the landscape of television news.” Open this photo in gallery: Former governor-general Romeo Le Blanc (right) shakes hands with Mr. Robertson (left) after presenting him with the Order of Canada in Ottawa in 1998. Jonathan Hayward/ Mr. Robertson received numerous awards throughout his career, and TV Guide magazine named him Canada’s “most trusted news anchor” for eleven consecutive years. He was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada back in 1998. He was approached by multiple political parties about becoming a candidate, and he even received an offer for a Senate appointment in 2003 but turned them all down. Lloyd John Robertson was born on January 19, 1934, in Stratford. His father George worked as a machinist’s helper for Canadian National Railway and had eight children with his first wife who passed away before marrying Lilly Francis with whom he had two sons: George Junior and Lloyd. Mr. Robertson faced challenges during childhood due to his mother’s severe mental health issues which led her to undergo a frontal lobotomy-a now outdated procedure-after other treatments failed. In his autobiography, he mentioned that “Her condition has haunted me all of my life.” From an early age, Mr. Robertson developed an interest in radio and managed to secure a job at CJCS while still attending high school. By July 1954, just twenty years old, he became an announcer at CBC Radio based out of Windsor. John Boyd/ His charisma and great voice quickly propelled him through various roles at CBC until he became host for their flagship program The National from 1970 to 1976. It was during this time that the industry saw significant changes along with internal turmoil within the CBC itself where anchors were expected only to read scripts without making changes-something both management and Mr. Robertson wanted to change as they aimed for him to take on both journalistic responsibilities alongside anchoring duties similar to what American networks were starting to adopt. In 1972, amidst what he described as “Byzantine bureaucratic turmoil” at CBC followed by union strikes affecting operations directly involving him as news anchor-he experienced nervous exhaustion trying personally to resolve those issues himself. Feeling there would always be union-related challenges if he remained there pushed him toward taking one big risk; leaving behind CBC for CTV back then considered ‘upstart’, where he’d have both journalist and anchorman roles combined-an event widely covered across headlines.Open this photo in gallery:
