Currently, there are 131 active wildfires in northwestern Ontario, with 30 classified as not under control, according to the latest information from Ontario Forest Fires.

Evacuation orders or alerts remain in effect for regions near these fires:

The largest fire in the area, known as Thunder Bay 36, is still out of control and covers over 315,000 hectares.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has issued an implementation order for areas near Fort Frances 14 for public safety and fire suppression.

This order allows the ministry to enforce formal, legally binding rules that limit activities and manage access within emergency boundaries.

“Even when fire behavior seems minimal, large wildland fires may stay classified as NUC [not under control] for a longer time because it takes a while to ensure that the entire perimeter is secure,” the ministry explained on Thursday.

“We advise everyone to keep away from all active fires nearby. This helps ongoing suppression efforts and keeps Fire Rangers and aircraft safe.”

The Pan Canadian Aerial Asset Program run by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre has dispatched two Q400 airtankers and a birddog aircraft to assist in the area.

In addition, six AT-802 planes along with a team of 12 have been sent from Alberta to aid wildland fire suppression efforts.

An incident management team from Alberta is now overseeing the Highway 599 fire cluster in the Sioux Lookout sector, which includes SLK084, SLK086, and SLK089.

This group of fires has shown minimal activity over recent days but remains uncontrolled, according to Ontario Forest Fires.

As of Saturday evening, forest fire danger ratings have mostly shifted to low or somewhat moderate throughout the northwest. However, some areas in Kenora and Thunder Bay districts still show high hazard levels, including one extreme-hazard area near Dryden.

New Fires Detected in Northwest

Two new wildfires were confirmed in the northwest region on Friday.

Nipigon 83 (NIP083), located near the southwest side of Sim Lake about 23 kilometers northwest of Kagianagami Lake, covers five hectares and is not under control. Nipigon 84 (NIP084), situated along Lake Nipigon’s shoreline approximately 11.5 kilometers west of Beardmore, spans only 0.2 hectares and is also not under control.

A restricted fire zone continues across most parts of northwest region and a small section of northeast for zones one through thirteen.

Highway Closures Update

The province’s interactive highway map shows that Highway 527 at Kiashke Zaaging Anishinaabek – Gull Bay First Nation – remains closed all the way up to Highway 811 junction.

Highway 811 is also shut down due to ongoing wildfire activity except for local traffic evacuating from affected areas.</P

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) strongly advise people for their safety and that of emergency responders:</P

Keep clear from affected regions; avoid visiting wildfire sites just for photos or videos. Follow evacuation orders and instructions given by local authorities without panic. Stay away unless travel is essential within impacted areas. Keep updated through official channels regarding any new information or evacuation notices. Avoid returning until it’s confirmed safe by authorities. Help maintain clear roads so emergency teams can do their jobs properly.
If you’re evacuating make sure you take necessary medications, ID cards/documents along with mobile devices/chargers plus anything needed for family members or pets.
