Nine residents from Brampton are among 21 individuals charged after one of the largest drug busts by weight in Ontario’s history, with authorities confiscating nearly 1.7 tonnes of illegal substances valued at over $139 million.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) revealed on Thursday (July 23) that a comprehensive investigation known as Project Bay resulted in the seizure of roughly 973 kilograms of suspected cocaine, 660 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, and 49 kilograms of opium, along with firearms, cash, and various other items.
This investigation targeted an alleged cross-border drug trafficking network that police claim operated using a “broker-style model” within the commercial transportation industry to distribute illegal drugs through legitimate supply channels.
Search warrants were executed across several areas including Brampton, Windsor, Corunna, La Salle, Kleinburg, Markham, and Caledon.
As per the OPP’s report, a total of 21 individuals have been charged with 102 offences under the Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Nineteen suspects were taken into custody while two remain at large.
The following Brampton residents have been charged:
Gagandip Thindal, aged 27, faces ten charges including conspiracy to import cocaine, conspiracy to possess cocaine for trafficking purposes, multiple firearm offences and possession of property obtained through crime exceeding $5,000. He was remanded into custody after a bail hearing and is set to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto on July 27.
Simranjit Singh, age 32, faces twelve charges including conspiracy to import cocaine; conspiracy to possess cocaine for trafficking; firearm offences; importing cocaine; trafficking cocaine; and possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine. He was also remanded into custody post-bail hearing and is scheduled for court appearance in Toronto on July 22.
Jatinderpal Singh, aged 39, has been charged with two counts of conspiracy related to importing cocaine and possessing it for trafficking purposes. He has been released on an undertaking.
Jasvinder Sohi, age 55, faces two charges regarding conspiracy to import cocaine along with conspiracy to possess it for trafficking purposes. He too was released on an undertaking.
Tejwinder Sandhu is a 29-year-old facing two charges linked to conspiracy regarding both importing cocaine and possessing it for the purpose of trafficking. He was released after his bail hearing.
Tarminder Singh is just 19 years old and faces nine charges which include failing to comply with a release order as well as possession related offences involving proceeds from crime; importing heroin; trafficking heroin; possession intended for traffic involving both cocaine and opium. He remains in custody after his bail hearing.
Gundeep Tariwal is aged 32 facing four charges including those related to importing both cocaine and methamphetamine along with possession intended for drug traffic involving cocaine. Following his bail hearing he has been released.
Mehakpreet Singh is a 24-year-old who faces eight charges including firearm-related offences alongside conspiracy as well as drug-trafficking charges pertaining specifically to both cocaine and methamphetamine. He was held pending a bail hearing.
Karandeep Singh is also age 27 facing six different charges encompassing firearm-related issues alongside conspiratorial activities as well as possession aimed at drug traffic concerning both coke & meth. After his own bail hearing he remains held
The OPP reported that this investigation led not only toward substantial drugs but also included confiscation efforts resulting in seventeen firearms being seized which consisted even an anti-tank rifle among ammunition types plus prohibited weapons along with approximately CAD$80K cash alongside USD$10K currency ranging from jewelry pieces vehicle ownerships & electronic devices acquired during operation efforts!
