Sweetgrass Harvest and Braiding Event at the Guelph Turfgrass Institute
Thursday, June 25, 10 a. m. to noon (Guelph Turfgrass Institute, backyard patio area or, in case of rain, GTI room 1102) This event will feature teachings on the cultural importance of sweetgrass, tips on respectful harvesting practices, and hands-on instruction for braiding sweetgrass. Participants will engage in traditional drumming songs and smudging led by Cara Loft, Educational Developer for Indigenous Knowledges and Pedagogies at the University of Guelph. Attendees will have a chance to take home their own sweetgrass braid or create braids for donation to the Indigenous Student Centre. Tea and light refreshments will be available. Registration is open to all First Nations, Inuit, and Métis-identifying students, staff, and faculty. This month features powerful stories, memoirs, and histories that showcase Indigenous voices and experiences. From fiction to personal narratives, these books explore themes like identity, resilience, memory, and storytelling strength. The U of G Arboretum is integrating Indigenous art along with Anishinaabemowin (the language of the Anishinaabeg) and Kanien’keha (the language of the Mohawk) into a redesign of signs along the Native Trees of Ontario Loop so that traditional stories about native trees can be shared year-round. Kaitlin Gallant-a Mi’kmaw artist who previously worked at U of G-was commissioned for this project; she designed both the Indigenous Initiatives Strategy as well as this year’s Orange Shirt Day design. This project received funding from RTO4 Regional Tourism Partnership Funding aimed at supporting Indigenous storytelling in public areas alongside contributions from private donors. It was initiated by Spencer Martens; a former student engagement coordinator for Arboretum now serving as OAC liaison manager. The creation process has been collaborative among various campus collaborators and community members sharing words about tree kin within this loop. Collaborators include Cara Loft-educational developer for Indigenous knowledges-and Shauna Kechego-Nichols-professor specializing in indigenous studies-as well as Anishinaabemowin teachers; Elder Theodore Flammand-species-at-risk coordinator from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory-and research partner with WISE & Young Labs; plus staff members students faculty who contributed through knowledge sharing organization among others. The trees lining this trail loop represent all species found across Ontario that are suitable for cultivation within Arboretum grounds; each example originates from known wild Ontario sources.
