A 30-year-old man faces two counts of second-degree murder following the disappearance of his mother and grandmother in Whitby earlier this month.
Ava Burton, 58, and her mother Tatilda Noble, 85, were reported missing from a home in Whitby on Oct. 14. Durham police were called to check on the welfare of two individuals at a residence on Scepter Place near Oshawa.
Initially, police mentioned that a family member had raised concerns about their well-being, and when officers arrived, they discovered items that seemed “suspicious in nature.”
On Saturday, Durham Regional Police Service announced that they had charged Noble’s grandson and Burton’s son with the murders.
“We are still looking for those two females who are presumed dead and we are looking for their remains,” Sgt. George Tudos of Durham police told reporters on Saturday.
The authorities have not located Noble or Burton yet. Officers continue to investigate for any leads that could help them find the women’s remains.
Tudos indicated that they believe the women went missing sometime between Sunday, Oct. 10 and Thursday, Oct. 14.
The suspect was arrested in Oshawa and charged on Friday while residing at the same home as when he was apprehended, Tudos said. He hasn’t provided any information about where the women might be found.
“We are not looking for any other suspects. We believe this is an isolated incident,” he said.
Tudos noted that police have secured the scene for about a week now.
