A constable in training who tragically lost his life in a crash near the Ontario Police College on Tuesday is being honored by Durham police and his former boxing coach as an “awesome human being” who “believed deeply” in helping others.
Tyrone Magbitang, 27, died when a transport truck collided with a sedan at the intersection of College Line and Imperial Road in Malahide township, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Elgin OPP arrived at the scene around 11:20 a. m. Tuesday.
An additional occupant of the sedan, also a constable in training, was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, OPP reported. The driver of the transport truck was unharmed.
In a statement released Wednesday, police noted that Magbitang joined the service as a special constable in May 2023 and was chosen as a police constable recruit just last April.
“Tyrone was a compassionate, dedicated and service-driven individual who believed deeply in helping others and making a positive difference in the community,” the statement said.
“Although his time with our service was far too short, Tyrone made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him,” read the statement. “He will be remembered for his kindness, professionalism, and the tremendous potential he brought to our organization.”

Fabing assisted him with training for a charity boxing match and referred to him as an “awesome human being” who served as an inspiration to many.
“He was so pleasant, so kind,” she said.
“In this crazy world, he’s a reminder.. that there are good people out there.”

Procession held Wednesday afternoon
Magbitang’s body was transported from London, Ont., to Toronto on Wednesday during an official police procession. Ryan Connolly, Deputy Chief for Durham police, attended along with several officers including Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw. Police indicated that Magbitang’s loved ones were also expected to participate in the procession. Shireen Fabing helped coach Magbitang at Kingsway Boxing Club. Fabing mentioned that he was part of The Rookie Division-a group of first responders raising awareness and funds for Toronto charity Fight To End Cancer.Source link
