Police have confirmed that there’s no longer a threat to public safety in West Lorne, Ont., after they requested residents to shelter in place Sunday afternoon due to reports of a disturbance involving a possibly armed individual.

In an update at 4 p. m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stated that a person was taken into custody without any issues, and officers will remain on site to continue their investigation.

The shelter-in-place order was put into effect just before noon and affected anyone near Walker and Mary streets.

“The OPP is taking every precaution necessary to resolve this situation and maintain public safety.”

OPP advised the following:

If you are outside, seek shelter immediately in a secure location. If you are inside, lock all doors and windows and close curtains or blinds to avoid drawing attention. Do not approach or engage with the suspect. Call 911 immediately if you see or encounter him. If you are driving, proceed directly to your destination and seek shelter indoors. Do not pick up hitchhikers. Follow any instructions provided by officers at the scene.

People were asked to avoid travelling to that area of West Lorne until further notice, OPP said.

An increased police presence can be expected in the area while officers respond and investigate, they added.
