Residents of Sarnia will be sporting red and white on Wednesday as the city marks Canada’s 159th birthday.

The Canada Day festivities begin at 11 a. m. at Canatara Park.

Recreation Coordinator Rebecca Warren mentioned that some popular attractions are back this year, including multicultural food stalls, the Handmade Vendor Market, and a hula hoop fun zone.

“There is the opening ceremonies at 1 p. m., there’s multicultural performances and Canada Day drumming at the bandshell,” said Warren. “Then we having things like crafts with Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery, tattoos, balloon clowns, we have top shot hockey, inflatables, face painting and an interactive doodle wall, lots of fun things like that.”

The annual parade featuring about 50 floats will start at 11:30 a. m. from Colborne Road and Lakeshore Road.

To make room for the parade, Lakeshore Road from Indian Road to Cathcart Boulevard, Lake Chipican Drive from Lakeshore Road to Sandy Lane, and Sandy Lane will be closed from 9:30 a. m. to 12:30 p. m.

The activities at Canatara Park will last until 4 p. m., after which everyone can head over to Centennial Park at 6 p. m. for nine food vendors and live music.

“We’ll have buskers roaming through the event; we also have concerts at the Agora,” said Warren. “At 6:15 it’s The Infinite, then Rumble Fish at 7:15 p. m., followed by Brothers Wilde at 10:15 p. m., leading up to fireworks at 10 p. m.”

Warren mentioned that temporary bike lanes would be set up in certain areas as part of the city’s push for active transportation.

Bike lanes will be available along Michigan Avenue from Indian Road to Blackwell Side Road from 7:30 a. m. until 4:30 p. m., with a bike corral managed by the Bluewater Trails Committee located at Canatara Park.

Front Street will also see traffic closures between London Road and Exmouth Street from 9 a. m. until after the fireworks; it’ll serve as temporary bike lanes during this time.

Sarnia Transit will provide free shuttle services to both parks starting from Northgate Plaza.

Shuttles will run every half hour from 9:30 a. m. to 11:30 a. m., then again from 1 to 4 p. m. heading towards Canatara Park, and later on from Centennial Park between 8 p. m. and 11 p. m.

In Petrolia, celebrations kick off bright and early at 7 a. m. with a Kids Fishing Derby sponsored by the Lambton Central Petrolia Optimist Club. There’s also going to be a downtown scavenger hunt starting at 9 a. m., followed by an annual flag raising ceremony held by the Royal Canadian Legion at noon.

Due to high temperatures expected that day, “Field of Fun Days” has been moved indoors to the gymnasium of Petrolia YMCA running from 11:30 a. m. until 2 p. m.

The Inflatable Race scheduled for Tank Street Heritage Field has been pushed back to take place at Greenwood Park starting at 8 p. m.; fireworks are set for that evening around 10 o’clock also in Greenwood Park.

Warwick Township is hosting its own gathering planned for Centennial Park in Watford between 11 a. m. and 2 p. m., complete with inflatables, outdoor games, face painting plus live music along with food options available too! Fireworks are set for dusk over Warwick Conservation Area afterwards!

A Family Picnic celebrating Canada Day runs from 11 a. m. until 2 p. m. on Wednesday over at Port Franks Community Centre; this free event features family-friendly games alongside inflatables plus face painting!
