Tomi Hulkkonen, the local coordinator for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 494 in Windsor, has passed away following a car accident on January 5.

He had just recently become a member of the Ontario Construction Secretariat board and was a long-time supporter of Ontario’s construction industry and skilled trades.

In a statement, the OCS mentioned that Hulkkonen made an impactful impression in his brief time on the board.

“Although Tomi had only recently joined our board, he made an immediate and lasting impression through his thoughtfulness, humility and strong commitment to serving others,” the statement said. “He was widely respected across the unionized construction community and dedicated his career to advocating for working people.”

His passing brought forth tributes from all over the region.

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Polievre shared a message on Facebook, acknowledging Hulkkonen’s contributions to both the trades and his wider community.

“Tomi was a true leader, a carpenter, and a champion of all working men and women,” Polievre wrote. “Together we championed a Canada where all who worked hard could afford a great life. We worked with MP Chris Lewis on Bill C-241 to advocate for travel tax deductions for the tradespeople who build our country.

“Our prayers are with his wife and children as we mourn the tragic loss of a husband, father, and our friend.”

Hulkkonen was actively involved in promoting workforce issues, apprenticeship programs, and labor mobility. He was well-regarded within the unionized construction sector for his advocacy on behalf of skilled trades workers.
