A person has died on Walpole Island First Nation due to “apparent gunshot wounds,” according to the Walpole Island Police Service and Ontario Provincial Police.

Authorities say that just after 8 a. m. on Thursday, police were called to a disturbance involving a firearm on Squirrel Island Road in the community, which sits about 120 kilometres northeast of Windsor, Ont., near the border with Michigan.

Upon arrival, police said they found an individual; a 29-year-old Walpole Island First Nation resident was pronounced dead on the scene.

One person was arrested and will remain in custody until a court appearance on Jan. 7.

While there is no additional threat to public safety, police said the investigation remains ongoing. They have not released any further information about the victim or the suspect.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Lambton OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS).
