As the new year begins, folks in Sarnia-Lambton are getting used to some changes in recycling across Ontario.

Starting January 1, Circular Materials introduced a standardized list of items that can be recycled throughout the province.

Some newly accepted products include deodorant containers, toothpaste tubes, ice cream tubs, black plastic packaging, and frozen juice containers.

People can also recycle coffee cups and other beverage cups made from paper and plastic after a pilot program was tested in select areas.

Circular Materials reported that initial results from the pilot indicated an eight percent boost in collected polycoated paperboard.

This update is part of Ontario’s full shift to a new extended producer responsibility (EPR) system for blue box recycling.

The program will be completely funded and managed by the manufacturers of packaging and paper products, which is seen as a good way to enhance recycling efforts.

You can find more information on the Circular Materials website.
