The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) has unveiled its updated accessibility plan called Every Door Open.

This plan aims to enhance the accessibility, inclusivity, and welcoming atmosphere of schools and workplaces for students, staff, families, and visitors.

The board mentioned that the new plan “reflects its dedication to meeting and exceeding Ontario’s accessibility requirements under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), the Ontario Human Rights Code, and related legislation.”

Since 2022, the LKDSB has implemented several improvements such as identifying barriers in schools and addressing issues like sidewalks, front entrances, and washrooms.

They’ve also introduced features like elevators, ensured safer access to buildings, and revised transportation policies.

Apart from physical improvements, the board has worked on making practices more inclusive regarding student transitions, school trips, hiring processes, and customer service while providing ongoing training for staff on accessibility and human rights.

Director of Education Gary Girardi stated that although significant progress has been made by the board, enhancing accessibility is an ongoing journey. “We are deeply committed to moving forward with transparency, purpose, and accountability,” said Girardi. “Every Door Open is an important guide that helps us stay focused on creating safe, inclusive, and barrier free spaces for every individual who learns, works, and visits our schools. This responsibility is integral to who we are as a public school board.”

Girardi emphasized that ensuring accessibility isn’t just a one-time effort.

“It is a commitment embedded in every decision we make, every space we enhance, and every interaction within our system,” he said. “We want all members of our community to feel welcome, supported, and valued when they walk through our doors.”

Looking ahead over the next three years, the LKDSB plans to concentrate on improving hiring practices and support for all staff to foster inclusivity while ensuring that all new schools, building upgrades, and playgrounds are fully accessible.

They also aim to enhance digital tools by ensuring online resources meet high accessibility standards along with increasing support for accessible transportation options and personalized student plans.

For more information including the complete document details can be found on the LKDSB’s website.
