If you have old recycling bins that aren’t accepted under the new recycling program, you can now turn them in, according to an announcement from the City of Windsor on Friday.

The City of Windsor and Circular Materials will be collecting these old recycling bins and carts for two weeks starting February 10.

Residents can sign up online through the portal until February 8 at 11:59 p. m. After registration, they will receive their pickup date via email, and crews will come to collect the bins on that day.

“Ensuring bins are properly emptied and accessible will help collection crews work efficiently and safely,” the city said in a statement.

Circular Materials along with the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority (EWSWA) also offers a drop-off program running until April 1, allowing residents to return their old bins at EWSWA depots.

An EWSWA spokesperson mentioned that this drop-off service is only available for Essex County residents.

All collected bins from both EWSWA and the City of Windsor will be recycled, likely “chipped and turned into pellets,” as stated by the spokesperson.

As part of Ontario’s new recycling contract with Circular Materials, residents have received new recycling bins – which are now the only ones accepted for collection.

This change is part of Ontario’s transition to single-stream recycling effective January 1, where materials don’t need sorting, and producers who create packaging and paper are responsible for its recycling costs.

Many residents had questions about what to do with their existing bins when they got new ones.

Circular Materials CEO Allen Langdon previously noted that residents must use the new bin “to ensure compatibility with the new single-stream automated cart collection system.”
