A woman from Whitby is being remembered after going missing on an air ambulance off the coast of Massachusetts.
Jolene Weir was a registered therapist who dedicated the last six years to helping patients get home.
Her daughter, Mackenzie Weir, shared that Jolene always prioritized others before herself.
“She loved her family, her friends, nature, camping, Starbucks, Taylor Swift, a clean house, musical theatre and of course, travelling the world,” said Weir in a post on Facebook. “This job was her dream job combining her ability to care for others and see the world, which she did.”
She was one of four employees aboard a Latitude Air Ambulance that went missing off Nantucket on October 3.
The company released a statement describing Jolene’s unique presence and her love for family and friends along with her passion for helping others.
“With years of experience caring for others as a respiratory therapist in a hospital, combined with her love of travel and seeing the world, Latitude truly was her dream job,” the statement reads. “Her incredible ability to care for and love others extended not only to her patients but showed even more in her most favourite roles as a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend.”
Local politicians from Whitby also expressed their condolences through social media posts.
Mayor Elizabeth Roy shared this message:
I was deeply saddened to learn that former Whitby resident Jolene Beth Weir was among the four Canadians aboard the Latitude Air Ambulance flight lost in the Atlantic Ocean early Saturday morning while travelling from Bermuda to Boston.
Jolene and her husband raised their family in Whitby. I know this heartbreaking news will be felt by many in our community.
On behalf of Whitby Council and our community, I extend my condolences to Jolene’s family and friends – and the loved ones of all six people aboard the flight.
Mackenzie’s full statement about Jolene is here:
My mom, Jolene Beth Weir (Presley), was a registered respiratory therapist who spent the last six years working for an air ambulance company transporting patients home or to medical services from anywhere in the world. Friends would often ask me where she was located around the globe; I’d have to check find my friends to let them know she was in Japan, Egypt, Greece or Northern Canada – literally anywhere! She dedicated her life to saving lives and recently focused on changing people’s lives for better by getting them where they needed to be. This same mentality wasn’t just part of her work; it defined every aspect of who she was. She had a natural gift for storytelling and wanted everyone around her to feel good before thinking about herself. If anyone needed help with planning anything at all, she’d already figured it out before you even asked. She adored her family, friends, nature hikes, camping trips , Starbucks runs , Taylor Swift songs , keeping things tidy at home , musical theatre shows , and yes-travelling far & wide. This job fulfilled both aspects-caring deeply while exploring new places alongside it.
Last night we received confirmation that she had been listed among two pilots, a nurse, a patient, and their accompanying family member due onboard. Early Saturday morning around 1:30 am, she found herself flying from Bermuda toward Boston when communications were lost abruptly leading into disappearance later confirmed debris sighting indicating probable fatalities onboard.
I could fill pages writing memories about us together but suffice it now saying simply ‘I love you Mom’. Can’t wrap my head around how surreal this situation feels right now.
Grateful thanks go out towards Latitude Air Ambulance’s staff members US Coast Guard rescue teams & other emergency responders who continued searching tirelessly until something tangible appeared regarding wreckage recovery efforts took place over last few days since incident occurred.
Thankful too those reaching out within my dad brothers extended families-we appreciate kindness shown even if overwhelming sometimes! Please remember-go hug your mom today!!![]()
A private memorial service will take place on October 17.
