Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy has come forward to denounce a wave of misleading information and anti-Muslim sentiments targeting a nearby shelter for women and children. She is encouraging residents to dismiss divisive narratives on social media.

The situation started after a post went viral online, incorrectly stating that local government funding was being directed towards “Islamic-exclusive housing” instead of general welfare services for Canadians.

The unfounded claims quickly sparked intense backlash on social media, leading to an increase in negative comments and xenophobic attitudes aimed at Muslim Welfare Canada (MWC) and its facility, the Muslim Welfare Homes emergency shelter in Whitby.

In response to this growing hostility, Mayor Roy released an official statement on June 1, 2026, through Instagram and other platforms to counter the false narrative and clarify the facts about the shelter’s operations.

“The doors of Muslim Welfare Homes are open to anyone experiencing a crisis,” Mayor Roy stated, explicitly correcting the misinformation regarding the shelter’s mandate.

She highlighted that the facility operates with an inclusive approach, serving women and children from all races, backgrounds, ethnicities, and faiths, rather than being limited to one religious group.

Moreover, the Mayor’s office reminded everyone of the organization’s long-standing presence in the community. They pointed out that the shelter has been a trusted partner within Durham Region for over 30 years.

During these three decades of service, this emergency facility has helped thousands of vulnerable women and children find stability during their times of need.

Expressing her concern about how quickly divisive rhetoric can spread, Mayor Roy called on community members to actively promote truth by sharing verified information instead of unverified harmful posts.

According to local reports from Durham Radio News tracking this situation closely, municipal leaders and community advocates are keeping an eye on online reactions to ensure safety for both residents and staff at the shelter.

Representatives from local organizations have echoed the Mayor’s thoughts by emphasizing that emergency shelters are crucial infrastructure in Durham Region. They operate based on principles of universal dignity and care for everyone regardless of who manages them or their background.
