Thanksgiving Hours for Durham Region: What’s Open and Closed

This year, Thanksgiving Day lands on Oct. 13, 2025, which is the second Monday of the month in Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Clarington.

Canada has been celebrating Thanksgiving since 1879, although the date has changed over time. It wasn’t until 1957 that Governor General Vincent Massey officially established the second Monday of October as a fixed Thanksgiving Day.

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect to be open and closed this Thanksgiving in Durham.

OPEN

Most restaurants that are usually open on Mondays-it’s best to call ahead to confirm Cineplex movie theatres in Bowmanville, Oshawa, Ajax and Pickering will be operating, along with Landmark Cinemas in Whitby Certain Shoppers Drug Mart locations Outdoor recreation areas like major parks and trails including the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail and the Oak Ridges Moraine Several craft breweries that typically open on Mondays will maintain their regular hours on Thanksgiving; this includes All or Nothing Brewhouse in Oshawa and Old Flame in Port Perry. Town in Whitby will also welcome visitors with several events at Town’s Pumphouse location on the waterfront to mark the season’s end. Some community centers will remain open; Harmon Arena (regular hours) and Delpark Homes Centre (9 a. m. to 5 p. m.) in Oshawa plus Mc Lean Community Centre in Ajax (7 a. m. to 2 p. m.). Most other facilities across Durham will be closed. Convenience stores Oshawa Zoo All three casinos: Pickering Casino Resort, Ajax Casino and Blue Heron Casino in Scugog

CLOSED

Banks Government offices (this includes all town and city halls) Canada Post (no mail pick-up or delivery) Libraries Pickering Town Centre (though some outdoor-facing restaurants may still be open) Oshawa Centre (some outdoor-facing restaurants may also operate) LCBO locations All Beer Store locations Most grocery stores Art galleries and museums Service Oshawa Humane Society of Durham Region Wal-Mart locations

TRANSIT

Durham Region Transit and Pulse will follow a holiday schedule. GO Transit will operate according to a Saturday schedule.

WASTE COLLECTION

The blue box collection originally scheduled for Monday will instead take place the next day in Whitby and Oshawa.
