The Waterfront Trail at Lynde Shores Conservation Area in Whitby, near the main entrance, will be closed temporarily starting on Monday.
This closure is happening because of wetland restoration work just south of the main parking lot.
Central Lakes Conservation Authority recently received $2 million in federal funding for Lynde Shores. The work began earlier this year and will continue for the next four years.
The project will create new wetlands, restore or enhance existing ones, and implement barrier beach protection measures to address climate change challenges like rising water levels and increased storm events.
The objectives include improving wetland resilience to extreme temperatures caused by climate change; enhancing habitat resilience to higher and more variable water levels; reducing negative impacts from watershed runoff; promoting biodiversity and plant species richness; as well as increasing community awareness, education, and engagement regarding the importance of Lynde Shores Coastal Wetlands.
