Durham Regional Police have taken a Toronto man into custody after he allegedly tried to illegally open a bank account in Whitby.
The police responded to a report of fraud at a CIBC bank located at 308 Taunton Road E. around 4 p. m. on June 4.
Bank staff alerted the authorities after the man reportedly attempted to open an account using fake identification documents. Officers arrived and arrested him without any issues.
Upon searching the suspect, police discovered several bank cards that were not registered in his name. At the time of his arrest, he was already wanted by multiple other law enforcement agencies for similar crimes and was under restrictions preventing him from possessing banking documents or cards not in his name.
Rodrigo Martinez-Palacios, 27, faces charges including fraud under $5,000, three counts of possessing identity documents belonging to another person, uttering forged documents, two counts of breaching probation, and failing to comply with a release order.
He has been held for a bail hearing.
