Three teenagers – the youngest being just 14 – are facing a total of 17 charges after they were discovered in a stolen car in Whitby on Saturday. One of them has been charged in connection with a break-in at a Pickering jewelry store and an attempted robbery at another jewelry shop in Oshawa just two days earlier.

Durham Police noticed the stolen Honda SUV near Twin Streams Drive and Country Lane and tried to box it in. The driver managed to escape after colliding with a police cruiser but crashed into a tree shortly after, leading the suspects to flee on foot.

Officers, supported by the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, K9 Unit, Tactical Support Unit, and Robbery Unit, found all three suspects and took them into custody.

Authorities believe one of the teens was involved in the jewelry store robbery on Thursday at Peoples Jewellers located in Pickering City Centre, as well as an attempted robbery that same day at Oshawa Jewellery in the Oshawa Centre.

The investigation into both robberies is still ongoing.

A 16-year-old from Whitby faces three counts of possession of stolen property, three counts of disguise with intent, dangerous operation of a vehicle, failing to stop for police, leaving the scene of an accident, robbery, attempted robbery, and two weapons charges.

He has been held for a bail hearing.

A 14-year-old and another 16-year-old – both from Whitby – have been charged with possession of stolen property and disguise with intent.

Both were released on promises to appear.

If anyone has cell phone footage, dash cam recordings or surveillance images related to this incident, they are urged to contact the Robbery Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5355. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at http://durhamregionalcrimestoppers. cawhere tipsters might qualify for a cash reward.
