Habitat for Humanity’s plan to construct 46 stacked townhouses on the east side of downtown Whitby received a warm welcome during Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, with Mayor Elizabeth Roy expressing she was “super excited” about the initiative.
The organization intends to build 26 townhouse units on vacant land located between Gilbert Street and Dunlop Street, west of Reynolds Street. Additionally, they plan to add 20 more units right to the north at the northeast corner of Hickory Street and Dunlop.
All units will be affordable housing, prioritizing Whitby residents.
Habitat for Humanity hopes to secure approvals by mid-year and aims to start construction in the fall, targeting completion by late 2027 or early 2028.
Flora Tay from Habitat for Humanity mentioned that they are still waiting on a complete funding package from the province “to help with the funding strain” and expect to have a clearer idea about rents for these units later this year.
Whitby Councillor Rhonda Mulcahy referred to it as a “project of envy.”
“Everybody would like to see this multiplied across the province.”
