Environment Canada is warning about slippery roads and possible river issues, advising caution in areas north of the 401.

Environment Canada has issued a warning about potentially hazardous travel conditions across much of the GTA tonight as freezing rain approaches, increasing the chances of icy and slick roadways.

A special weather statement is currently in effect for Markham, Vaughan, and Richmond Hill, while a yellow freezing rain warning has been issued for Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa, where greater ice buildup and possible power outages are anticipated.

Toronto and Peel Region were also under a special weather statement; however, that advisory has since been lifted for those areas.

What should I expect?

In locations affected by the special weather statement, officials say precipitation will likely start as snow or rain late today before possibly turning into freezing rain this evening.

Some regions could see up to two millimeters of ice accumulation.

“Roads and walkways may become icy and slippery. Be very careful if walking or driving,” the weather agency stated in its advisory.

For Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa, Environment Canada has put out a yellow freezing rain warning due to an increased risk level.

The agency notes that precipitation will likely begin with snow or ice pellets before transitioning to freezing rain that could last several hours before tapering off overnight.

“Roads and walkways will likely become icy and slippery,” the warning indicates while adding that localized utility disruptions are also possible because of ice build-up.

Authorities are urging everyone to exercise extra caution if traveling tonight-especially during the evening commute-since even small amounts of ice can make roads and sidewalks dangerous.

The freezing rain is expected to wrap up later this evening or overnight as temperatures slowly rise above zero.
