Federal funds serving to Whitby meet Ontario housing targets

The City of Whitby is placing its $24.9 million from the Federal Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) to good use, launching a sequence of packages to fast-track housing approvals throughout the city and dedicating 10 per cent – $2.5 million – to spur improvement downtown.

The city was awarded the cash, administered by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Company, to assist initiatives aimed toward constructing extra and various housing choices in the neighborhood and create long-term systemic modifications within the improvement course of.

“With support from the Housing Accelerator Fund, Whitby is taking meaningful action to address housing challenges. From new financial incentives for adding secondary suites to partnering with Habitat for Humanity on affordable housing, these initiatives will increase housing supply, streamline approvals, and support sustainable growth,” mentioned Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy. “Together, we’re working to ensure everyone has access to safe, affordable, and diverse housing options.”

The initiatives embody:

New Monetary incentives for property house owners so as to add further dwelling models, resembling basement flats, secondary suites, and backyard suites, to current properties
New digital submission and monitoring for residential constructing permits, simplifying and rushing up the approval and cost course of and lowering wait instances for candidates
Up to date density by-laws that enhance the utmost variety of models allowed on residential tons to 4, enabling larger housing flexibility and supporting a rising inhabitants
Partnership with Habitat for Humanity via the donation of surplus land to assist the creation of inexpensive housing for residents
$2.5 Million Funding within the Downtown Group Enchancment Program to stimulate higher-density residential improvement in Whitby’s downtown core, selling sustainable development close to transit choices and key providers

In March 2023, Whitby Council pledged to assist the constructing of 18,000 new houses by 2031 and as Whitby enters its second 12 months of HAF-supported initiatives, Roy mentioned the city stays targeted on collaborating with its neighbours and different ranges of presidency to foster sustainable development and enhance housing availability.

“As the town continues to grow, this funding has fast-tracked approvals to support more high-density development that lowers the cost of building, making the cost of housing more affordable,” he mentioned. “It has also enabled the town to partner with Habitat for Humanity to provide surplus land for more affordable units, making homeownership a reality for many. It is important for us to work collaboratively to ensure residents have affordable and sustainable housing options.”
