Whitby’s Brock Street Brewing, which made a splash when it opened its downtown location in 2019, has ceased operations.
It’s unclear if there was a falling out among the four partners or if money troubles caused the closure, but the brewery has been shut down since late last week, and there hasn’t been any word on the company’s social media accounts.
Co-owner and spokesperson Mark Woitzik hasn’t replied to multiple requests for comments.

There’s been a lot of buzz on social media regarding the closure due to the lack of confirmation from the brewery owners. 12welve Bistro & Tapwerks, which runs a restaurant within the building and had been exclusively serving Brock Street beer on tap, expressed that it was “saddened” to learn that Brock Street “appears to be winding down operations.”
12welve Bistro is still open and has started offering other local beers to fill the gap.
“We are and continue to be, a tenant of the building, which is independently owned and not connected to Brock Street Brewing Company operation,” said John Allen of 12welve Bistro. “While we had an exclusive arrangement to serve Brock Street Brewing products so long as they were able to supply our needs, we ultimately had to make decisions in the best interest of our guests when that supply could no longer be sustained.”

“As a fellow local business, we recognize the role they played in the community and the many connections they built with guests and supporters over the years. We wish their team the very best as they transition forward during this difficult time.”
Brock Street Brewing kicked off in 2015 on Hopkins Street in Whitby with hopes of transforming an old fire hall at 204 Brock St. S., which had been empty since 2004, into a must-visit brewery.
A few years later, as plans changed due to town decisions about demolishing the former fire hall, they moved into a larger three-storey building one block south. Their new location boasted enough space with an 8,000-square-foot brewery, a bottle shop, and eventually an upstairs private lounge and event area.
The brewery quickly became popular in Whitby’s downtown scene. The company actively engaged with locals – even launching a beer to support a local rock band – and had announced plans for expansion into Cobourg this year while sponsoring events there last year.
Last week saw an abrupt cancellation of regular weekly events like Euchre night and Trivia night; their beers also disappeared from sale on their website.
Additonally, Lake of Bays Brewery in Muskoka-previously doing some contract brewing for Brock Street-is now selling cases of their beer at steep discounts as they try to clear out stock before it goes bad.
As one person commented on Reddit, it marks “the end of an era.”
EDITOR’S NOTE: Brock Street Brewery did not move into the old fire hall in 2019 but rather into a building one block south at Dunlop. INsauga regrets this error.
