An autonomous transit bus that crashed in Whitby, Ont., final month, leaving the operator critically injured, was in guide mode on the time of the collision, Durham Regional Police say.
In an announcement launched Wednesday, police stated the investigation into the Dec. 16 crash decided the car was in guide mode previous to and on the time of the crash.
“Therefore, the hazard mitigation safety systems designed for the vehicle while in autonomous mode were disabled at the time of the collision,” the assertion stated.
The crash occurred when the car was southbound on Watson Avenue West, south of Victoria Avenue West. It left the roadway and struck a tree, police stated.
