The City of Ajax yesterday joined its voice to calls from the councils of Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering and Durham Area, asking for the elimination of toll from the provincially-owned portion of Freeway 407.

Freeway 407, from Brock Highway in Pickering to Freeway 35/115 is provincially-owned and tolls on it are set by the province.

An Ajax city council decision famous that Ontario handed laws, Invoice 162, the Get It Achieved Act 2024, to ban new tolls from provincially-owned highways.

It additionally famous that Freeway 413, a timesaving freeway working via York, Peel and Halton areas, is being constructed at a projected value of $10 billion and is included within the laws to ban new tolls.

“The provincially-owned portion of Highway 407, which is almost exclusively in Durham Region, is excluded from the legislation and is the only tolled provincially-owned highway in Ontario, resulting in unfair economic impacts to Durham Region residents and businesses,” the decision mentioned.

It identified that the Province of Ontario has beforehand eliminated tolls on Highways 4112 and 418 positioned inside Durham, “demonstrating the willingness to removing existing unfair tolls on provincially-owned highways and should, therefore, include the provincial 407 as part of the proposed legislation.”

The city council decision mentioned the elimination of tolls on provincial Freeway 407 would scale back the price of residing for Durham Area residents and drive financial progress, whereas guaranteeing honest and equitable remedy throughout all provincial 400-series highways.

“Ajax Council hereby requests that the Province of Ontario remove tolls from the provincially-owned portion of Highway 407,” the decision mentioned.

Council directed {that a} copy of this decision to be despatched to Ontario Minister of Transportation, all native Durham MPPs, and all Durham native space municipalities.
