The lockdown at a high school in Kitchener, Ont., was lifted on Monday morning after police looked into a report involving weapons in the area.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service reported that officers were dispatched to Grand River Collegiate Institute around 9:20 a. m. ET following a claim of someone inside the school with a gun.

Officers stayed on site for several hours.

“Through investigation, it was determined that the reported incident had not occurred,” police said in a release Monday afternoon.

“The call is being treated as a swatting incident.”

Swatting refers to making a false report with the aim of triggering a large-scale police response.

Three nearby public schools-Crestview Public School, Chicopee Hills Public School, and Stanley Park Public School-were also put on hold and secure. Those measures have since been lifted, according to police.

The Waterloo Region District School Board mentioned in an announcement on its website that students at Grand River Collegiate Institute remained in their classrooms, and movement within the school was restricted during the lockdown. Access to the building was limited throughout this time.

“We ask that parents, families and caregivers of students at this school please refrain from calling the school during a lockdown as our staff’s main priority is to keep students safe,” the board said.

Several parents and family members waited across the street from the school for updates from authorities.

The school board’s policy states that a lockdown is used to secure a facility when there’s an active situation or threat of violence occurring inside.
A hold and secure happens when there’s an ongoing situation outside but isn’t directly related to what’s happening at school. During such times, normal activities continue while exterior doors remain locked until things are resolved.

Police continue to investigate.
