Family Day is packed with chances to explore our area. Since starting in 2008, more businesses have gotten involved to offer activities and events locally on the third Monday of February each year.

Explore Waterloo Region has a ton of ideas for things to do indoors and outdoors this weekend, including Monday.

With temperatures rising, many people will likely head outside. The has also opened up free fishing this weekend to let families give it a shot.

“Certain times of the year the Province of Ontario opens up fishing so families can give it a try and it’s free, you don’t have to have a license for this weekend,” Susan Cook-Scheerer, with Explore Waterloo Region, said. “So you can go and try your hand and this time of the year your ice fishing so it is a little bit different.”

Shades Mills Conservation Area will be available for this if the weather allows. Be sure to check their website for conditions before heading out.

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are also options at other conservation areas in the region.

“There’s lots to explore in Waterloo Region, and if you’re an outdoors person this is the weekend to get over to Chicopee. So Chicopee ski and Chicopee Tube Park it looks like the weather is going to be fantastic,” Cook-Scheerer said. “They’re perfect places for families to go, get outdoors and enjoy some fun times.”

The region also features many ice skating rinks that families can enjoy.

If you prefer staying warm indoors, there are plenty of options as well. Family Day activities at Kitchener Market, the chocolate trail at St. Jacob’s Market or playing games at Bingemans are all drawing visitors in.

“More of the attractions and the events in Waterloo Region are gearing up for families and trying to do something special with families in mind,” Cook-Scheerer said.

Some museums in the area will host Family Day events like Family Day Pet Fest at The Museum or Minecraft Mineral Showcase at Earth Sciences Museum at University of Waterloo. The Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum will also feature a Family Day Carnival.

The City of Cambridge has an extensive list of activities planned for Family Day as well; more details can be found on their website.

A complete list of what’s happening over Family Day weekend can be found on Explore Waterloo Region’s website.
