WASAGA BEACH – The Town of Wasaga Beach has chosen the Ontario-based firm Urban Strategies to spearhead the design and development of Destination Wasaga-a significant planning initiative that aims to revamp the community’s waterfront, downtown, and tourism sector.

Urban Strategies will engage local residents, business leaders, and other stakeholders to create the Destination Wasaga Master Plan. The award-winning firm has put together a diverse team of specialists to assist in developing this plan, including architects, landscape architects, engineers, Indigenous design advisors, economists, tourism experts, as well as environmental and cost consultants.

This extensive project will cover a large portion of the Town’s waterfront and downtown areas, making it one of the most important planning and public engagement activities in Wasaga Beach’s history.

In May 2025, Premier Doug Ford announced $38 million in support of revitalizing downtown Wasaga Beach and its main tourist spots during the 2025 Ontario Budget. This funding is aimed at transforming these areas into a renowned four-season destination.

The investments from Ontario supporting Destination Wasaga aim to preserve local heritage while creating jobs and boosting tourism throughout the region. They include:

$25 million to aid in redeveloping Nancy Island Historic Site along with transferring administrative responsibility for this site from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming (MTCG) Nearly $11 million for reconstructing Beach Drive $2 million allocated for tourism planning in Wasaga Beach as well as developing the Destination Wasaga Master Plan

For Wasaga Beach, Destination Wasaga represents a once-in-a-lifetime chance. It’s regarded as one of the most significant master planning efforts since 1978 when substantial parts of downtown-along with shorelines, forests, and trails-were expropriated by the Ontario government. This led to demolishing homes and businesses to create what is now known as Wasaga Beach Provincial Park.

Here’s what happens next

Fall/Winter 2025 Public engagement begins

Community members along with businesses will be invited to provide their feedback through surveys, workshops, and open houses so that the Master Plan reflects local concerns and experiences.

Beach Area 1 roadway construction continues

The redesign of Beach Drive along with improvements made to roads will enhance infrastructure services near Beach Area 1. These upgrades aim to make it flood-resistant while also enhancing safety measures for traffic flow and pedestrian access-setting up future developments on commercial properties nearby such as a new premium Marriott Hotel.

Historic restoration at Nancy Island starts

Work on restoring Nancy Island Historic Site-which includes artifacts like HMS Nancy vessel-a museum-and lighthouse-will commence with an infrastructure audit aimed at finding ways to reactivate this vital heritage site while increasing its appeal year-round for tourists.

Land Transfer from Province to Town

Ontario will determine whether about 60 hectares of beachfront land can be transferred over to municipal control under conditions ensuring public access remains intact. This could enable better management aligned with implementing plans for Destination Wasaga.

Spring/Summer 2026 Design Development & Technical Analysis

The Urban Strategies team-with planners, d esigners, e cologists, and outside specialists-will examine environmental needs alongside community requirements while crafting initial concepts that prioritize ecological safety balanced with urban design opportunities.

Integration between Design & Infrastructure Planning The conceptual designs created by Urban Strategies will connect seamlessly with ongoing infrastructure initiatives (like road updates or work at Nancy Island), ensuring collaboration between master planning efforts & existing projects. Approval Process involving Council & Province Urban Strategies plans on presenting final concept proposals before relevant stakeholders including provincial partners who’ll jointly review before moving ahead into community implementation phases. Implementation Strategy A phased strategy will detail attainable short-term actions (for instance public space enhancements or temporary installations) followed by long-range investment endeavors along capital builds (including building activations or landscaping work). Monitoring Progress Success metrics tied directly back into community indicators include tracking investment levels drawn in; job openings created; increased visitor numbers; positive impacts reflected within local businesses all while safeguarding environmental integrity based on guidelines set forth through Downtown Development Master Plan.
