Anyone visiting Wasaga Beach shouldn’t be “pooping on the beach,” Premier Doug Ford stated as the Ontario town defends itself against what it describes as misleading social media posts.

These posts allege that individuals are defecating in the sand at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, and the town’s mayor claims that Wasaga Beach’s reputation is being “gravely harmed” by them.

“It’s a very popular beach,” Ford remarked during an unrelated press conference on Wednesday.

“They have no proof people are pooping in the park.”

The controversy began last month after a Tik Tok user went viral for asserting in a video that defecation at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park has been a long-standing issue.

The user, Natty Lynn, mentioned that people were putting up small tents and digging holes to use as restrooms. In her video, she noted that she doesn’t allow her kids to dig in the sand on Beach 1.

Last Monday, Mayor Brian Smith of Wasaga Beach urged Ford to take action regarding this issue.

Smith stated at a special council meeting that concerns from residents and tourists about cleanliness at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park were “gravely harming” the town’s reputation, which is provincially owned and managed.

He issued a detailed statement in July condemning these posts as “complaints that lack evidence and promote misinformation.”

“The town has received no evidence – from residents, visitors or the Ontario government – to verify that any undesirable, unsanitary behaviour has occurred on the beach areas that make up Wasaga Beach Provincial Park,” Smith added.

“If any evidence comes to light, I assure you that we will be quick to act.”

A spokesperson for the environment ministry told last month that staff at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park “have not observed this behaviour during their regular patrols of the beachfront or in response to any complaints.”

An additional ministry spokesperson indicated that while staff have “occasionally received complaints about defecation or urination on beaches since 2020, no specific evidence of these allegations has been found.”

Ford announced he has allocated $1 million in funding for Wasaga Beach to “build bathrooms and hire more staff.”

“Folks, don’t be pooping on the beach. Simple as that. We have no proof of it either,” Ford said.
