WASAGA BEACH – It’s confirmed! The Town of Wasaga Beach is getting a second high school.

Mayor Brian Smith celebrated the announcement today at a media event alongside MPP for Simcoe-Grey, Brian Saunderson, held at the Town’s new Wasaga Stars Arena.

The Ontario Ministry of Education will provide over $59.3 million to construct a high school proposed by the Simcoe County District School Board, which has the complete backing of both the Town and Council. This funding will create 1,145 secondary student spots in Wasaga Beach.

This marks the second high school approved by the Ontario government for Wasaga Beach in under nine months. Construction on the Town’s first provincially-funded high school began today.

Since taking office in November 2022, the Town and Council have been tireless in their efforts advocating at both county and provincial levels for students and families in Wasaga Beach. Their advocacy reached its peak during the most recent ROMA conference on January 20, 2025. Consequently, within just nine months, Council has welcomed over $116 million in provincial funding for two high schools in Wasaga Beach.

Additional Quotes

“As a vibrant and expanding community on the beautiful southern shores of Georgian Bay, Wasaga Beach has long needed a local high school. With this significant investment, this Government continues to address that need by providing our local students with access to an excellent learning environment supported by numerous extracurricular activities and events right here in their community.”

MPP for Simcoe-Grey, Brian Saunderson

Quick Facts:

Over the past 24 months, the Town and Council of Wasaga Beach have successfully advocated for and received over $129 million in provincial investments aimed at building new infrastructure including roads, two high schools, a community theatre, and more. Wasaga Beach is among the fastest growing communities in Ontario as well as Canada. The current population stands at 25,000 residents with projections showing it could double by 2051. Currently, Wasaga Beach is recognized as the largest community in Ontario without a high school and notably is also unique as it is home to over 15,000 residents without one. About 1,000 children of high school age are being transported daily outside of Wasaga Beach to attend schools in neighboring areas. High schools operated by Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board are open-access; therefore any child can enroll. This groundbreaking high school – marking a first for Wasaga Beach – is anticipated to open its doors in 2027 thanks to a $57.7 million investment from the Ontario Ministry of Education. The upcoming Simcoe County District School Board high school is projected to be ready by 2029 with an investment exceeding $59 million from the Ontario Ministry of Education.
