One of Ontario’s most popular beach towns is set to welcome a $45 million Marriott hotel.

The Town of Wasaga Beach, known for its vibrant summer scene at the southern end of Georgian Bay, has announced that Sunray Group will proceed with plans to construct an approximately 120-room Marriott hotel.

The hotel will be located on town-owned land near Beach Area 1-a 5.18-acre section of waterfront property between 1st Street and 3rd Street.

The new Marriott will feature a year-round, upscale restaurant, convention spaces, a fitness center, spa or pool area, retail shops, and wedding facilities, according to the announcement from the Town of Wasaga Beach.

“Sunray Group of Hotels is proud to be investing in the community of Wasaga Beach – the longest freshwater beach in the world,” said Ray Gupta, president and CEO of Sunray Group of Hotels.

Gupta’s family ran a seasonal business called Beach Bazaar along the main boardwalk during the 1970s.

“I have a strong connection to this beautiful community and to Beach Area 1,” Gupta shared. “This is where I spent a lot of time as a youth – I have amazing memories of family vacations spent enjoying the beach and the sun and all of the fun activities.”

The hotel represents phase one of what will become a four-phase development near the town’s iconic beachfront, according to local officials.

Sunray Group plans to invest over $45 million into building the Marriott hotel and will cover full development fees for all four phases of this project, added town officials.

The company also intends to invest $1.5 million into creating “Festival Square” adjacent to the hotel by the beachfront. This space will be available for outdoor entertainment and special events organized by the municipality.

The town and Sunray have also formed a joint profit-sharing agreement regarding three additional development phases that are anticipated to include more amenities and housing close to Beach Area 1.

This residential development might resemble what is found at Village at Blue Mountain where homeowners can opt into a rental pool for their units.

Wasaga Beach is currently undergoing improvements with $38 million in provincial funding directed toward roads and Nancy Island Historic Site enhancements.
