York Regional Police Chief Jim Mac Sween is addressing community concerns following criticism regarding the police response to a tragic home invasion that resulted in the death of 46-year-old Abdul Aleem Farooqi.

At about 1 a. m. on August 31, officers were called to the Farooqi home in Vaughan due to reports of a home invasion. Upon arrival, they found Farooqi with serious injuries and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

City News initially reported that Farooqi lost his life in front of his children during the incident.

In a statement made on Friday, Chief Mac Sween described Farooqi’s murder as “heinous” and “disgusting.”

“My heart goes out to all grappling with the violent murder of a husband, son, father, brother, friend, and leader,” said Mac Sween.

The Chief also responded to criticism that emerged after he previously advised residents against confronting armed intruders.

“It was suggested as a tactic in the hopes of preserving lives,” said Mac Sween. “When it comes to defending property, material items can be replaced – but lives cannot.”

Concerns About Police Response Time

Mac Sween further addressed what he labeled as “inaccurate reports” regarding how long it took for police to arrive at the Farooqi residence after receiving the emergency call.

While some sources claim it took up to 13 minutes for officers to reach the scene, the Chief clarified that this isn’t true.

“Officers were en route within 40 seconds of receiving the call and arrived on scene within 4.5 minutes,” he stated.

No arrests related to Farooqi’s homicide have been made so far.
