GUATIRE, Venezuela (AP) – The governments of the United States and Venezuela announced on Friday that they are looking into the possibility of rekindling diplomatic relations, with a team from the Trump administration arriving in the South American country that same day.

This small group of U. S. diplomats and security officials came to Venezuela to evaluate the potential for reopening the U. S. Embassy in Caracas, according to a statement from the State Department.

The Venezuelan government confirmed on Friday that U. S. diplomats had arrived in their country and revealed plans to send a delegation to the U. S., although no specific timeline was provided.

In a statement, Delcy Rodríguez’s government said it “has decided to initiate an exploratory process of a diplomatic nature with the Government of the United States of America, aimed at the re-establishment of diplomatic missions in both countries.”
