Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A well-respected heart doctor who treated former vice president Dick Cheney has stated that President Donald Trump’s choice to take an excessive amount of aspirin “makes no sense.”

Dr. Jonathan Reiner appeared on CNN after Trump discussed his health in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, revealing he consumes 325 milligrams of aspirin daily-much higher than the usual low dose of 81 milligrams-and has done so for several years.

“I’m a little superstitious,” Trump told The Journal. “They say aspirin is good for thinning out the blood, and I don’t want thick blood pouring through my heart. I want nice, thin blood pouring through my heart. Does that make sense?”

Reiner-a professor at George Washington University and a member of the American College of Cardiology-explained on CNN that anticoagulants don’t actually thin blood. “So that makes no sense; that actually makes nonsense,” he said.

He continued: “It’s not like changing something from gumbo to chicken soup; it doesn’t make it thinner. It makes you less likely to clot.”

Cheney passed away in November at age 84 after experiencing five heart attacks during his life. In 2012, Cheney had a heart transplant four years after leaving office.

He collaborated with Reiner on a book titled Heart: An American Medical Odyssey and received care from him over many years; Reiner also spoke at Cheney’s funeral last year.

Reiner mentioned that doctors used to recommend aspirin therapy as a way to prevent heart attacks but noted recent findings show that especially individuals over 70 might not benefit from primary prevention with aspirin and could even face risks like significant bleeding.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s physician said Trump’s aspirin regimen does not make sense.

Photos have shown Trump’s hands covered in bruises which he tried to conceal with makeup. The White House has stated he suffers from chronic venous insufficiency where leg veins struggle to return blood back towards the heart.

“So why is the President taking an unorthodox dose of aspirin?” Reiner questioned. “And media outlets have shared numerous images showing his right hand and possibly his left hand displaying this persistent bruise.”

Trump mentioned that his high dosage of aspirin leads him to bruise easily and stated doctors advised him towards lower doses-something Reiner agreed with.

“The White House has claimed this relates back to chronic aspirin therapy,” Reiner explained further. “So if you’re bruising frequently and your doctor advises you are taking too much aspirin, why wouldn’t you lower your dose? It makes no sense.”

In his later years, Cheney became quite vocal about his disapproval of Trump while his daughter Liz Cheney-a congresswoman representing Wyoming-voted for Trump’s impeachment due to his actions related to January 6th riot and later co-led an inquiry into that attack on Capitol Hill.

Liz Cheney along with her father endorsed Kamala Harris during her run against Trump in 2024.

Donald Trump asserted early one morning via Truth Social that he enjoys “PERFECT HEALTH” and claimed he “ACED” cognitive tests following reports regarding various vein issues as well as skin conditions linked with poor diet and hearing problems.
