President Trump on Wednesday ordered his administration to arrange to accommodate tens of 1000’s of “criminal aliens” on the Navy base at Guantánamo Bay, the most recent prong in his widening crackdown on immigration.

Mr. Trump didn’t supply particulars on how the plan would take form, however he instructed the Departments of Protection and Homeland Safety to get the location prepared.

“We have 30,000 beds in Guantánamo to detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people,” he stated. “Some of them are so bad we don’t even trust the countries to hold them, because we don’t want them coming back, so we’re going to send them out to Guantánamo.”

He stated the transfer would “double our capacity immediately,” including that Guantánamo was a “tough place to get out of.”

In latest weeks, about 40,000 immigrants have been held in non-public detention facilities and native jails across the nation as funding constraints have restricted the variety of detention websites.

Including 30,000 beds would dramatically broaden the federal government’s detention capability. A website on the 45-square-mile base might maintain these 30,000 deportees. That website is on the other facet of the physique of water known as Guantánamo Bay from the Pentagon’s jail for terrorism suspects.
