On Wednesday morning, hours after a person drove a pickup truck into New 12 months’s Eve revelers in New Orleans, killing 10 individuals, President-elect Donald J. Trump prompt on social media that his condemnations of undocumented immigrants had been validated.

“When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true,” Mr. Trump mentioned on his web site, Fact Social. “The crime rate in our country is at a level that nobody has ever seen before,” he added falsely. “Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department.”

Mr. Trump, who will probably be sworn in on Jan. 20, added in his put up, “The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!”

Some early stories in regards to the assault mentioned the truck was pushed throughout the border from Mexico into the US. Officers have since recognized the suspect as a U.S.-born citizen and Military veteran who lived in Texas, Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar.

He drove what gave the impression to be a rented truck that carried an Islamic State flag, officers mentioned. He died after exchanging gunfire with authorities.

Mr. Trump made considerations about undocumented immigrants crossing the border central to his 2024 marketing campaign, and has promised the biggest mass deportation effort in U.S. historical past as soon as he takes workplace.

A Trump transition spokesman didn’t instantly reply to an e-mail searching for remark after the suspect’s historical past was made public.

Federal officers mentioned they have been investigating whether or not anybody else was linked to the assault and have been operating down leads in regards to the suspect’s associates.
