2024 was a year of political turbulence in the United States. Former President Donald Trump made headlines as he became president-elect, setting up an unprecedented return to the White House. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden’s term ended with significant twists, including his withdrawal from the 2024 race. Below is a month-by-month recap of the year’s biggest political moments according to NBC News.

January: Trump Faces Legal Challenges

A jury ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million to E. Jean Carroll for defamation. Despite the courtroom loss, Trump won the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, becoming the frontrunner for the Republican nomination.

February: Biden Cleared, McConnell Steps Down

Special Counsel Robert Hur decided not to charge Biden over classified documents found at his office and home but cited security risks. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced his resignation as GOP leader, ending his long tenure.

March: Trump Clinches GOP Nomination

Trump secured the Republican nomination for president in March, solidifying a rematch against Biden. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court ruled states could not bar Trump from the ballot over his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

April: Abortion Rulings Shake Arizona

The Arizona Supreme Court upheld an 1864 near-total abortion ban, sparking protests. Days later, Governor Katie Hobbs repealed the ban and signed a new law allowing abortions up to 15 weeks.

May: Trump Convicted of a Crime

Trump was convicted of falsifying business records in connection to hush money payments. The historic verdict marked the first time a former president was found guilty of a crime.

June: Biden and Trump Debate

Biden and Trump faced off in their first debate, but Biden’s lackluster performance led to calls for him to drop out. Meanwhile, Hunter Biden was convicted on gun charges.

July: Assassination Attempt on Trump

Trump survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania. Days later, Biden withdrew from the presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.

August: Harris Becomes Democratic Nominee

Harris accepted the Democratic nomination, making history as the first Black and South Asian woman to lead a major party ticket. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dropped out of the race and endorsed Trump.

November: Trump Wins Presidency

Trump defeated Harris to become the 47th president, reclaiming the White House with 312 Electoral College votes.

December: Biden Pardons Hunter and Jimmy Carter’s Demise

In a surprising move, Biden pardoned his son, Hunter, and commuted sentences for 1,500 nonviolent offenders before leaving office.

The year closed with the death of former President Jimmy Carter at age 100, marking the end of an extraordinary chapter in American history.
