A strong winter storm moving through southern and eastern Ontario is advancing north, leading Environment Canada to issue weather alerts for parts of northern Ontario.

A stretch of northeastern Ontario, from Manitoulin Island to Mattawa, including North Bay and Sudbury, is under a winter storm warning as of 5:45 p. m. on Tuesday. The area could see up to 15 centimetres of snow along with several hours of freezing rain and ice pellets, according to the weather agency.

Environment Canada meteorologist Eric Tomlinson mentioned it will be a challenging weather situation.

“As we head towards Sudbury, North Bay, that’s a really big mixed bag of precipitation for this event. It starts out as snow, but then it could switch over to a mix of ice pellets and freezing rain for some of this event,” Tomlinson said.

“As you head further north, we expect more snow.”

The area from Sault Ste. Marie north to Cochrane and stretching east past the Quebec border is under a snowfall warning as of 5:45 p. m. on Tuesday. Up to 20 centimetres of snow could fall in that region according to Environment Canada, which is also cautioning about local blowing snow.

The stormy conditions might continue into Wednesday evening.

“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions,” wrote Environment Canada in its warnings. “Allow extra time for travel. If driving, turn on your lights, slow down and maintain a safe following distance.”
