About the Programme:
In light of the current Ford government’s funding scandals and budget cuts, along with aspirations for more radical governance in the city, this program reflects on a history of protest, labor, and resistance in Toronto. The archive from the 1990s feels eerie; we see similar economic challenges and a provincial government led by the controversial Mike Harris that spurred innovative forms of protest through a feminist perspective.
About the Series:
This is the Feminist Archive is an essential screening series aiming to connect past feminisms with those emerging in the 21st century. The films and videos featured here pave a way forward for feminism, whether responding to or aligning with earlier feminist movements. Numerous examples of early feminist video/film explore avant-garde strategies while also addressing intersectionality. This season shines a light on how domestic spaces are politicized, examines women’s bodies in public areas, and considers portable cameras as tools for protest. With abortion rights being challenged in the U. S., alongside attacks on trans and racialized individuals across borders, these works from the last century feel both relevant
and strikingly familiar. Through discussions with highlighted artists and filmmakers, this screening series explores Canadian women’s contributions to media-making while contemplating its future.
Please stay tuned for more screenings!
